Nyasha Blessing Dube (26) from Zvishavane, a small mining town in the Midlands Province, Zimbabwe, is a media practitioner with 6 years of experience in community journalism. She believes that media is a powerful advocacy tool. Nyasha is the Founder and Managing Editor of a startup community media Women's Weekly Journal, an alternative media platform that amplifies women’s voices and addresses their socioeconomic and civic issues in Zvishavane and Mberengwa rural areas. The areas are information deserts hence the journal bridges the information gap. The media outlet reaches approximately 2500 women every week through talkshows, podcasts and community engagement meetings. Nyasha’s writings mainstream gender issues, her articles have been published locally and regionally. Nyasha volunteers with Hands of Hope Trust as a communications officer, curating content on women’s socioeconomic rights and is a member of the International Republican Institute supported Generation Democracy, a global network of youths who lobby for increased youth participation in democracy. She has partnered with Internews under the Zimbabwe Media Development and Rooted in Trust projects to combat misinformation and disinformation in rural communities. Nyasha is motivated by the need to close information gap in rural communities and dreams of a gender balanced Zimbabwe where young women occupy leadership spaces. She envisions Women’s Weekly Journal contributing to this goal as a solution journalism platform run by the young women she is currently mentoring. In five years, Nyasha wants to establish an inclusive media center where women get factual information so they make informed decisions.
