Biography

I'm the technology editor for Defense One. I write on information technology, AI, big data, predictive analytics, cybernetics, nanotechnology, genetics and genetic ethics, invention, climate change and climate change mitigation, demography, literacy, public policy and neuroscience. In addition to THE FUTURIST magazine, where I served as an editor for nine years, my writing has appeared in Slate, Salon, The Atlantic, Quartz, MIT Technology Review, National Journal, The Wilson Quarterly, The Johns Hopkins Magazine, the Utne Reader, and as part of Discovery channel broadcasts and special features. My first book, The Naked Future: How the Science of Prediction Changes Everything, was publishin in March 2014 from Current, a Penguin imprint. I've had the good fortune to interview such technologists, policy experts, and visionaries as MIT roboticist Rodney Brooks, Google research director Peter Norvig, military strategist Edward N. Luttwak, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, former CIA director Robert James Woolsey, tech guru Tim O'Reilly, environmentalist Lester Brown, flying-car-creator Paul Moller, historian Lewis Lapham, inventor Ray Kurzweil and many other fascinating thinkers on various topics related to culture, technology, and innovation. I'm the 2006 winner of the Barry Hannah Prize in short fiction, was a finalist for the 2004 One Story short story competition, and was the winner of the 2006 Eugene Walter Award for the Novel. I hold a master’s degree in writing from Johns Hopkins and my short stories have appeared in such literary journals as The Yalobusha Review, Main Street Rag, and Touchstone
