Ben McGirr, 22, was found dead at his brother's house in Westabrook in February 2023. He died of the combined toxic effects of MDMA (ecstasy) and cocaine. The coroner recorded a drug-related death. Ben, of Chestnut Road in Plymouth, was described as having a "heart of gold" and somebody who would help anyone and his death. A tribute said his death has "left a big hole" in the family.

At a meeting attended by about 50 members of the public Devon County Council's development management committee refused the proposal to create a new landfill at Lower Brenton Farm.
