Biography
My primary niche is game criticism, specifically game criticism that acknowledges how games are part of the larger media landscape. I mix game studies with my knowledge of modern literature and culture, as well as my lived experience as a biracial Canadian creator. I believe the future of story-driven games lies in diverse indie and AA development. AAA games are limited by their capitalistic nature, and while there are some great exceptions, generally speaking, the huge hits are hyper-focused on driving sales and capturing a narrow demographic of "hardcore gamers" a.k.a. "core gamers". I'm interested in capturing the moments in gaming that show us what game narratives are truly capable of, without this hyper-focus on ROIs. Games cannot take the place of lived experience, but akin to certain qualities of literature and movies, they can help us understand our zeitgeist and where we are situated within it. I love to write about how game narrative design is continuing to evolve, and how game writing in the indie community can amplify diverse voices. I'm also hooked on advocating for indie game dev projects and have previously interviewed developers from Kit Fox Games, Mermaid Heavy Industries, and Stitch Media.
