He had no idea he would be reunited with his dad, U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Michael LuGrain, who spent a year deployed and surprised his only son on Tuesday inside the Banning classroom. Several regional news teams and local dignitaries were on site to capture the emotional moments of the reunion.

Incredibly, the popular race has hosted riders who have gone on to compete in the Olympics and Tour de France. The event is sponsored by San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. The inaugural Redlands Bicycle Classic was held on Memorial Day weekend 1985. It has grown and morphed into a much bigger event than initially intended. And it’s a community event.

Wildlands Conservancy’s Executive Director Frazier Haney said it was a tremendous loss. “David was more than a leader — he was a friend and mentor, and we feel his loss acutely,” Haney said. “There will never be another person with the combination of David’s vision, knowledge, skill set, and deep love for humanity and nature. He will be dearly missed.
