Biography

I have published essays with O Magazine, the Atlantic online, CityLab, Oxford American, Bitter Southerner and Narratively. I collected and curated “Making Eyes on the Prize: an Oral History” for the Ford Foundation on the 30th anniversary of the groundbreaking documentary series. I have a Ph.D. in women’s and gender history from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I believe my work is a form of social justice, a means of addressing the wrongs of the past so as to offer hope for the future. I combine my love of story and oral history with my training in research and theory, such as when I used the sudden popularity of hot chicken in Nashville to explore the history of race and segregation in urban development. That essay was included in Cornbread Nation 2015: The Best of Southern Food Writing. I believe my work is a form of social justice, a means of addressing the wrongs of the past so as to offer hope for the future.
