That year, the city of San Francisco unveiled a new jail on the same 242 acres of land, this one without any secure outdoor space. Now, exercise takes place in an indoor gym or in a cell—which means that people incarcerated there may not see the sun at all. In 2019, a group of former inmates who spent up to eleven years awaiting a trial date in the jail sued the city and its law enforcement.
