Earnhardt was the sport’s biggest star, a crossover icon who was tough as nails with the swagger to match. During more than 25 years of racing on NASCAR’s top circuit, Earnhardt won 76 races and seven championships, but in death, he may have accomplished much more. Historically, fatalities in racing were accepted as an occupational hazard.
