  • State Rep. Jay Dean says any school voucher program must have long-term funding solution

By Randy Ferguson Verified| Kilgore News Herald Verified State Rep. Jay Dean says he remains “open-minded” about school voucher legislation, but tall hurdles remain, including a long-term solution to fund such a program. The third legislative session ends Tuesday, and Texas House members won’t meet again until Monday or Tuesday, meaning time has run out on any voucher deal. Dean said Thursday that he expects Gov. Greg Abbott to call a fourth special session, although he’s uncertain about the timing.

Longview News-Journal

The Longview News-Journal Dates back to 1871 under independent publishers, including James Hogg, later Texas governor, and Carl Estes, Longview civic figure. The publication was purchased by Cox Newspapers in the 1980s and sold by Cox to ASP Westward in 2009. It is closely affiliated with the Marshall News Messenger, another former Cox newspaper (published in nearby Marshall) which was sold to ASP Westward along with the News-Journal. In 2012, ASP Westward announced the sale of the Longview and Marshall papers, along with 12 of its other non-daily East Texas papers, to M. Roberts Media, a family owned media company which is owned by members of the Morris Roberts family. The Longview News-Journal provides exceptional reach to local advertisers through its newspapers, websites and associated publications. Stephen McHaney serves as Publisher.
