It refers to the idea that once this week’s official National Congress of the Communist Party meeting wraps up on Friday, maybe things will get back to normal after a series of strict pandemic lockdowns. Zhang Mancheng and his wife run a small sushi restaurant on a café-lined street in Shanghai. Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, they have had to close their four other restaurants one by one.

  • A Yiddish revival is underway at this prestigious Chinese university

Huang  took a class on Jewish culture last year at Peking — known as the Harvard of China — and became fascinated with klezmer music. Now he’s enrolled in the first Yiddish language course ever offered in China.  “It is a symbol of the history of the Jewish people,” he told The World.

They're gaining in popularity, especially among the younger generation. Jenny Liu is a schoolteacher in Zhumadian in central China. With about 7 million people, it's still considered a small city. When she’s not working, her days are spent on the go, shuttling her kids around town. Liu drives a Seahorse, a Chinese brand mini-electric car.
