Biography

I've been a journalist for more than 18 years, having spent 13 of those as reporter and editor of a local, English-language newspaper in Spain, writing news, features and opinion columns on local affairs, national politics, the environment, travel and history. I've also had feature articles published in a variety of publications, including The Sunday Times, Open Democracy, The Local, and A Place in the Sun. I am passionate about investigative journalism and breaking news stories, and spent years writing about the plight of good faith homeowners in Spain’s illegal building scandal. My coverage also helped to bring about changes in Andalusian property law (http://thedesertarchives.com/other-media). I also revealed major failings in the clean-up operation following the 1966 Palomares nuclear accident. I've written in-depth features on a variety of subjects, from Spain’s asset declaration controversy (http://thedesertarchives.com/other-media) and the ongoing refugee and migrant crisis (https://thedesertarchives.com/the-calais-jungle) to car and film reviews. More recently, I've written about the US and UK finance and mortgage markets, in addition to organising and hosting podcasts and webinars. In addition, I'm the co-author of 'David Lean's Dedicated Maniac - memoirs of a film specialist', which I co-wrote with legendary film specialist, Eddie Fowlie. The book will be relaunched in the USA later this year.

  • Business tycoon Giles Fuchs on the reasons for buying an iconic 1930’s hotel

By Richard Torne Verified| Kingsbridge & Salcombe Gazette Verified Affable and immaculately attired in a tweed three-piece suit, Giles Fuchs is the quintessential English gentleman. Donning an impressive moustache, he could in fact pass off as a Terry Thomas lookalike, were it not for the fact that he lacks the beloved actor’s trademark caddishness. When I mention his sartorial tastes, he points to his shoes. “I love a Jeffery-West shoe, what can I tell you? If you're going to do a job, do it well,” he laughs.
