The fifty musicians explored go from Yoko Ono to Bobbie Gentry to Sun Ra. The one thing they have in common is great, sometimes greatly overlooked, musicality. If you have a music streaming service, ask it to play some of pieces described in this book.

I always approach these books, much like the “best album cover” compilations with a bit of wariness and skepticism. After all, one man’s “Poison” is another man’s…well, you get the drift. That said, this is an impressive lineup of writers, tackling the significant signposts of the modern musical landscape. All of the touchstone albums, in every genre, that you would expect are here…and then some.
