  • Humans in Africa’s wet tropical forests 150 thousand years ago - Nature

By Eslem Ben Arous, James Blinkhorn, Sarah Elliott, Christopher A. Kiahtipes, Mark Bateman, Mathieu Duval, Patrick Roberts, Robert Patalano, Emily Y. Hallett, Alexander F. Blackwood, Jacopo N. Cerasoni| Nature Verified AbstractHumans emerged across Africa shortly before 300 thousand years ago (ka)1,2,3. Although this pan-African evolutionary process implicates diverse environments in the human story, the role of tropical forests remains poorly understood. Here we report a clear association between late Middle Pleistocene material culture and a wet tropical forest in southern Côte d’Ivoire, a region of present-day rainforest.

  • Arid, mosaic environments during the Plio-Pleistocene transition and early hominin dispersals in northern Africa - Nature Communications

By Robert Patalano, Steffen Mischke, Pedro Piñero, Hugues-Alexandre Blain, Patrick Roberts, Alfonso Benito-Calvo, M. Chacón, Iván Ramírez-Pedraza, Elena Moreno-Ribas| Nature Verified AbstractThe earliest archaeological evidence from northern Africa dates to ca. 2.44 Ma. Nevertheless, the palaeoenvironmental setting of hominins living in this part of the continent at the Plio-Pleistocene transition remains poorly documented, particularly in comparison to eastern and southern Africa. The Guefaït-4 fossil site in eastern Morocco sheds light on our knowledge of palaeoenvironments in northern Africa.
