Biography
I am a Dutch national and have lived and worked as a journalist in the Netherlands, Canada, Mexico, the United States and Belgium. I have reported news that mattered for The Winnipeg Free Press in Canada, for The Daily News in Mexico City and for the Clearwater Sun in Clearwater, Fla. In 1979, I moved back to Europe to work for The Associated Press in Brussels, Belgium. I became the AP Brussels bureau chief in 1985. In the years that followed, I oversaw a significant expansion of AP Brussels' workload and workforce, in line with the fast-expanding agenda of the European Union. By the turn of the century, I led a 14-strong staff of writers, photographers and TV types and covered with them EU events from the Arctic circle to the Azores, from Ireland to the Greek isles. I also covered NATO military exercises, G7 and NATO summits and US presidential trips across Europe. What a trip that was! I left AP in 2014 to write for yachting media in Britain, the Netherlands and the USA. I write about the business side of the Dutch (super)yacht sector, about the engineering and innovation that goes into Dutch-built yachts and about companies that supply them with services and products. What a trip that is! .
