UNCF

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is a prominent nonprofit organization focused on enhancing educational opportunities for African American and other minority students. Established in 1944 by Dr. Frederick Patterson and Mary McLeod Bethune, UNCF has significantly impacted education in the U.S. by raising over $5 billion and supporting more than 500,000 students, while also strengthening 37 member Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). UNCF operates through a three-pillar strategy that includes institutional support for HBCUs, providing scholarships and fellowships, and advocating for equitable education policies. Its scholarship programs, such as the well-known "A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste," offer financial aid to students in various fields, including STEM and healthcare. Additionally, UNCF engages in advocacy efforts to promote college readiness and secure federal funding for education. Through its initiatives, UNCF continues to be a vital force in promoting educational equity and supporting the next generation of college graduates.
