Cabral| ACCP JOURNALS@ 1 INTRODUCTION Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for 17.9 million people dying from cardiovascular diseases in 2019, representing 32% of all global deaths.1 These deaths and related ASCVD events like myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, result from the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaque in the artery walls.
