Biography

My late grandfather had a habit that my grandmother hated: He smoked a pipe. Took it everywhere he went. So, in his front shirt pocket, he always carried a simple steel Zippo lighter. He could always spin a good yarn, and taught me to cherish the great storytellers who filled the sports page. That lighter, to me, was always a symbol of what journalists and storytellers do: We're a light in the darkness. I carry a plain Zippo lighter with me every day. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley with High Honors in English, I spent more than a decade as a journalist -- writing long-form features, game stories, analyses, columns, and profiles -- while serving as a digital publisher for Rivals.com, Scout.com, and 247Sports.com, then as a print editor for the San Francisco Examiner. I covered everything from teenage marathon swimmers to high school baseball to college football to the NBA Finals. After the paper contracted, I moved down home to Los Angeles and met my wife. During the pandemic, I expanded my skill set by writing on education, tutoring, legal advice, and high-end sports and entertainment memorabilia. Though I've recently transitioned to a civilian life, serving as the Director of Communications at Stephen Wise Temple and Schools, I still look to connect people through stories. The care I take in crafting a story is a point of pride. I look for the humanity in every subject. Throughout my career, I've also seen that stories are not just words on a page, and I've consequently become an expert in photography, graphic design, publication design, video production, and social media. My philosophy has always been that people care about people, and they want to read stories about people. I know I’m not done telling stories. I still have my lighter.
