Biography

Samuel Ajala is a science communication researcher and journalist working at the intersection of climate change, energy transition and sustainability issues in Africa. He is a graduate student in the Department of Communication at the University of Arkansas, where his research is focused on environmental and climate communication. Since 2018, he has actively been involved in election observation, community and media development, and civic youth engagement. He is a contributor and analyst to Gasoutlook, Table Media (Climate & Africa), and other local and international media outlets. In April 2022, he became the first Nigerian to participate in Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) media fellowship, which allows young journalists from around the world to gather in the German capital to talk to high-level stakeholders from science, politics, industry, and civil society. In the same year, he was also selected as a media fellow for Future News Worldwide (FNW) 2022 Digital Conference, organised by British Council to bring together the best 100 young journalists worldwide. Samuel has also been able to attend and commit to other local and international fellowships programs like Henrich Boll Stiftung Green Academy Program, UN SDSN Climate Actor Accelerator Programme and Africa Factcheck Ambassador geared towards climate action, media development and movement building. He also had several other media engagements with national and international platforms on climate change and civic youth engagement to promote social change. His bylines include Bloomberg, YesMagazine, Foresight Climate & Energy, Gasoutlook, Ijnet, Minority Africa, TheXylom, Climate Home News, Dataphyte, Adweek, AllAfrica, The Nation (Nigeria), Premium Times, TheCable, HumAngle, and The News Digest (Nigeria). Samuel is a member of international organisations and bodies committed to promoting climate action and movement, including YOUNGO, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Covering Climate Now (USA), Uproot Project (USA), Environmental Reporting Project and CLEW Journalist Network. Currently, he is co-building Solar360 as a sustainable energy media and tech-driven platform that combines the power of journalism, data analytics, and citizen-driven advocacy to drive the conversation about energy transition in Africa. Through strong journalism, the platform creates a melting pot for citizens, journalists, professionals, policymakers, and government to keep track of Africa's energy transition progress.
