Sarah Vehrs is a senior majoring in journalism and minoring in environmental science and policy at Cal State Long Beach. Sarah is a President's Scholar and has been working for the school newspaper, the Daily 49er for two years. She started as a staff writer and worked her way up to Assistant News Editor and then Enterprise Editor. Sarah has covered the Long Beach housing crisis, community news and campus life. She placed third in the 2018 Southern California Journalism Awards for best reporting via podcast for her coverage of the Japanese Internment Camps, which is featured on the Home page. She is currently the Enterprise Editor for The Daily 49er at Cal State Long Beach and a freelance writer for the Southern California News Group. Sarah has articles published in the Long Beach Press-Telegram, the Daily Breeze, the Grunion Gazette and the Daily 49er.

By Sarah Vehrs Verified| Long Beach Current Verified When nonprofit, right-wing organization Turning Point USA brought a flurry of conservative ideas to Long Beach State on Oct. 23, the university prepared itself with K-rail barriers, fencing and 70 police members. The event required dozens of personnel on standby, as well as added costs for LBSU, Turning Point USA and the Cal State University system. The total cost of the event was about $19,667.41, but according to Jeff Bliss, the university’s executive director of media, LBSU only paid $7,375.51.

The sixth annual Festival of Flight kicked off with the National Anthem and a flyover demonstration where four planes flew side-by-side, releasing a trail of smoke in their wake.
