It's called "Horchata," and it makes me feel pretty good about what to expect from the sophomore album, which is due out on Jan. 12. "Horchata" has many of the same elements that made just about the entire debut disc so enjoyable. It all starts with an incredibly catchy vocal line. That is embroidered with what sounds like marimba, raucous and layered percussion and fun background oohs and ahs. No guitars? No problem.

Rest assured, however, that the Vampire Weekend self-titled debut album, though released way back in January, will make my list. It may even end up topping my list. Some fellow musicologists will criticize that selection. Too derivative, they say. Faux-world music, others sneer. I don't know. I just loved the album from the first time I heard it.
