More than 100 showed up for the annual Purple Martin Fabulous 4 Miler, a race along Rutherfordton’s Purple Martin Greenway. This was the third race in the Rutherford Outdoor Coalition’s 2025 Running Race Series. The series has 11 races this year. The next one is the Leader of the Pack 5K, in downtown Forest City, scheduled for May 3.

HFAR has its main office and animal adoption center in Rutherfordton and two thrift stores in Forest City. “Things are going to be different; things are going to be better,” said Karen Parker, founder and executive director of HFAR.
