Biography
I’m Scott McDowell. Nice to meet you. I’m a writer and consultant. scott_circle I’ve spent the last decade working with businesses on issues related to transformational leadership and business growth. I’ve worked with a variety of businesses on hiring, leadership development and organization development as a consultant, facilitator and coach. I often write about the practical design of organizations. You can find my writing on creativity and teams for places like 99U (which won back-to-back Webby awards for Best Culture Blog in 2011 & 2012), Fast Company, American Express OPEN Forum, Accidental Creative, Unicornfree and Carol Roth’s Business Unplugged. I was quoted as an expert in Inc. for a story on hiring for creativity. I performed my talk “Organization Design is for Lovers” at South by Southwest Interactive in March 2012 as part of Future15, SXSW’s TED-like speaker track. The slides have been viewed over 1700 times. Prior to my work with organizations I worked at MTV as a producer of 120 Minutes among many other shows. I currently host and produce a freeform radio show at WFMU called The Long Rally. Can we start something that starts something? I think we can. About Me First things first: I believe in work, but I believe in creating livelihoods more. I believe that work should connect people in meaningful ways. I believe businesses are an essential piece of a healthy community. I believe businesses have the power and the responsibility to give as much (or more) than they receive. I believe in independence (being free to act and free from oppression). I believe in interdependence (working together as part of an integrated network). I believe in organic growth rather than aggressive growth. I believe we can create our own economies to live in (we’ve forgotten). I believe in having plenty but not hoarding. I believe in living well, reducing stress, and mindfulness. I believe in helping individuals be their best selves; a good leader provides access and a roadmap.
