Emergency services were called to a beach off Punch Bowl Road in San Remo, near Phillip Island, about 8.30am to reports two women and a man had been washed off rocks and were in the water. One of the women managed to make her way back to shore but the other woman and the man were unable to, according to police.

Police said the 39-year-old victim had been socialising with extended family on Saturday night before an incident early on Sunday morning. Residents of the Bowen Hills apartment block where the incident occurred said there was blood in the building's lift.
