  • How Not to Die While Solo Hunting

By Ben Long, Ross Robertson, Shane Townsend, Mark Kenyon| MeatEater Verified My friend Jack is a tough retired Montana logger who hunts like a cougar. Sure, he enjoys his hunting buddies. But for decades now, each hunting season, he disappears alone into the high country with a simple kit of dried food and a rifle after bighorn and elk. Often, he returns with game. Always, he returns with an adventure. While I share Jack’s taste in solitary hunting, I don’t have quite his tenacity. For me, a day or two alone is often enough.

  • Three Dead in Colorado Wilderness after Failed Attempt to Live Off Grid

By Megan Plete Postol Verified, Shane Townsend, Travis Hall, Mark Kenyon| MeatEater Verified Three family members were found dead in Gunnison County, Colorado, earlier this month after trying to live “off the grid” without any experience or preparation. The partially mummified and decomposed remains of Christine Vance, 41; Rebecca Vance, 42, and Rebecca's 14-year-old son, were discovered July 9 after a hiker notified authorities of a body in the Gunnison National Forest. One body was discovered out in the open, and the other two were in a tent.

  • Little pink clousers for you and me

By Shane Townsend| Hatch Magazine Verified Saltwater fishing is adventure. Why? Because there’s always a chance—just a chance—that you’ll tie into a sea monster. And with a fly rod in hand, any chance is just too much to pass. Today we’re steaming out of Wrightsville Beach with Captain Guion Lee, III (aka Captain G) and a three-man crew: Jon Newar of Captain Experiences, Trevor Lawson, and me. And the only thing we want to do is see what happens.
