Biography

I have taught academic English and philosophy in Australian and Japanese universities, and am currently an associate professor in the Faculty of Languages and Cultures at Kyushu University. For the past six years I have also been writing op-ed articles and columns on political and cultural issues for the "Japan Times". My writing has focused on the cultural nationalism of Japan's whaling and dolphin hunting industry, history and memory issues and international identity politics. Some of my op-ed writing has also complimented my scholarly research in philosophy, including modern Confucian thought. My book "Confucianism's Prospects" will be published by State University of New York Press in June 2019. In 2011 I began volunteering in North Japan following the tsunami of March 11th, and am currently co-director of a small disaster relief NPO called It's Not Just Mud, based in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. A number of my "Japan Times" articles have been about the international volunteer experience in the tsunami zone.
