Biography
First and foremost, I am a writer and storyteller, deploying words and images to engage audiences in just about every medium. I have tasted soil in a European vineyard; hiked to a shaded coffee farm in the Costa Rican rainforest; tumbled oysters in NY's Great South Bay; developed the concept for a multi-year marketing campaign for a nonprofit environmental group; judged a cheese contest in northern Spain; and collaborated on an award-winning investigative broadcast report on the illegal sale of nuclear triggers. The journey has been fascinating, inspiring, and sometimes strange, but it has NEVER been dull. My very first full-time job (at the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw) taught me how to be a generalist, capable of distilling and communicating the most essential information on any subject. Gradually, life led me to my passions—food, wine, travel, the arts, and environmental issues—and my writing has been published by outlets such as BBC Travel, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Condé Nast Traveler, Gourmet, Literary Hub, and Saveur (where I was deputy editor and editor-at-large). I have also worked as a translator for world-renowned chef Ferran Adrià and HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver; wrote my first novel ("So This is How it Ends," about the Spanish Civil War), which my agent is pitching; and served as an assistant professor for the Pratt Institute's graduate-level Design Management program. I was named a Finalist for the 2023 American Society of Journalists & Authors writing awards, in the food and drink category. On the consulting side, I have spent nearly two decades developing and implementing editorial strategy for the Rainforest Alliance (where I was formerly the director of communications). I also provide a range of freelance copywriting, editing, and naming services to companies and institutions, such as Target, General Mills, the Accountability Framework initiative, the James Beard Foundation, NYU's Stern School of Business, the Clark Hulings Foundation for Visual Artists, and ISEAL Alliance.
