Biography

Freelance journalist covering human rights, society and climate change. I have had my work published in The Diplomat, The Guardian, New Lines Magazine, The New Humanitarian, The Third Pole, DAWN, The Express Tribune, Dissent Today and The News on Sunday. My story covering food insecurity post-floods was awarded Humanitarian Reporting Award 2023 by Center for Excellence in Journalism and International Committee of the Red Cross. I am also the 2023-2024 Media Fellow from Pakistan for Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development, producing stories on the theme of "Militarism, Peace and Women's Human Rights" by reporting from Balochistan, Pakistan's largest but least developed province where I belong from, and from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. With my journalism, I aim to amplify the voices of the "deliberately silenced". Open to assignments via email.

By Somaiyah Hafeez| Asia Democracy Chronicles@ What was the longest sit-in yet in Pakistan has ended, but confusion still reigns in the dusty border city of Chaman, just across Afghanistan’s Spin Boldak. As a result, thousands of daily-wage earners who had been without livelihood for the last nine months are still looking for some relief. More than a week after a deal was struck between representatives of the central government and those of the protesters, the border gates were still suddenly shutting without explanation.

These are visuals from the music video, Mehr Othak, sung by Pari Zafar and Mubarak Dad.

  • One Baloch Woman's Decade-Long Fight for Justice — More to Her Story

By Somaiyah Hafeez| moretoherstory.org@ Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province, has been embroiled in an insurgency since the early 2000s that started because of the Baloch community’s long-standing socioeconomic grievances with the Pakistani state. The Pakistani military is accused of abducting thousands of political workers, students, journalists, and activists as a counter-insurgency policy in the province; anyone remotely suspected of being linked with militants is at risk of being whisked away.
