My name is Sonny Tapia. I am originally from the San Gabriel Valley in California, but I currently reside in Helena, Montana, where I am an education and criminal justice beat reporter for the Helena Independent Record. At the Independent Record, I also work as a photographer, shooting photos like editorial, feature, news, sports, events and more. After shooting for my college newspapers, nonprofit organizations, businesses and a California Collegiate League baseball organization, I took my knowledge into the professional daily print world. During my time in journalism, I have had my stories published nationally as well as locally and statewide, along with some photos being published in the Washington Post and other news organizations. I graduated from CSU Long Beach with a bachelor's degree in Journalism and received the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence: Feature Photography 2022 award. At East Los Angeles College, I graduated with an associate's degree in Journalism and a certificate in Journalism, while being a page editor on a team that won the Journalism Association of Community Colleges State General Excellence Award Print and Online 2019 and 2020. Former Canyon Creek Rural Fire District Board Chair Richard Grady refiled for a vacancy he created after a recall election, but state statute says he cannot be appointed. The issue is expected to come before Lewis and Clark County commissioners in May. Grady did not offer an immediate response. Grady was recalled by 97 votes on March 18 and the votes were certified March 27 via canvassing. "I am going to refile to be on the board," he said March 31.
