Biography

I’m a writer and ethnographer who explores the intersection of people, culture and their environment. I’ve written about climate change, technology, architecture, design, art, the Fukushima nuclear clean-up, Bolivian bonds, bitcoin and whisky. My work has been published in The Financial Times, The Atlantic, The Guardian, The Sunday Telegraph, Quartz, The Japan Times, Matter, and Tokyo Art Beat. I am particularly focused on climate change and social justice at the moment. In general, the projects that excite me the most are the ones that better people’s lives, whether by highlighting labour abuses, unhealthy environments, or identifying opportunities for economic empowerment. An anthropology major and trained journalist with native-level Japanese, I worked for the major Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun and then as a tech reporter for Reuters in Tokyo before becoming a design researcher and freelance writer. I have a knack for picking up languages (so far, in addition to Japanese, I speak Dutch, Spanish, a spattering of Italian, and can pull up an assorted ragbag of words from German, Polish, Shona…). I am British-Irish and have the infallible dry sense of humour that comes with such a heritage.
