In September 2018 Dr Stephen Games founded Booklaunch, which quickly became the highest circulation books magazine in the UK, with a print run of 55,000 copies. Tabloid-size pages run 1,500-word features, extracts from new books, interviews, reviews, word games and a prize quiz. Readership is made up almost entirely of Spectator and, until recently, New Statesman subscribers, and every edition is archived and viewable online at www.booklaunch.london, via the PageSuite app. In late 2020, Booklaunch started a book-publishing imprint—EnvelopeBooks—with a rolling programme of aspirational non-fiction and fiction titles from around the world, branded in stylish, ingenious "envelope" covers incorporating graphic elements that gave clues to each book’s contents. EnvelopeBooks went on to develop a separate imprint––PostcardBooks––for writers who merely wanted to bring out their memoirs. See www.envelopebooks.co.uk. Stephen began his career in journalism by writing reviews for the New Statesman while at the University of Cambridge, which he attended after a Foundation year at Harrow School of Art and three years at the Central School of Art. He ended his three years as a Cambridge undergraduate in 1977 by winning a Sunday Times competition for young critics. He went on to review for the BBC's weekly magazine, The Listener, and other publications before getting appointed Assistant Editor of the Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1979 and becoming the architecture critic for The Guardian, where he was commended in the British Press Awards of 1980. In 1981, at the invitation of Louise Purslow (now Greenberg), he began making documentaries for BBC Radio 3 and from 1984 hosted four series of "New Premises", a Radio 3 arts programme newly created by the Talks & Documentaries Department producer Tom Sutcliffe to offer an alternative to Radio 4’s Kaleidoscope. He left the BBC with Sutcliffe in 1986 to join the first intake of staff at The Independent as Arts Reporter. In 1987–88 he spent three months as an intern at WJHU and KSJN in the United States and then put together four bids for start-up radio stations in the UK: at Cambridge, Oxford and twice in London. His board members included Lord (then Sir Claus) Moser, Michael Heseltine, Tim Waterstone, and John Ranelagh. In 1993, after running for Parliament––unsuccessfully––in the 1992 General Election as Green Party candidate for Hampstead & Highgate, he moved to the USA and became an Opinion Page writer for the Los Angeles Times. He also taught media studies for two American universities: Boston University and American Intercontinental. In 2002 he edited a selection of transcripts of Sir Nikolaus Pevsner's BBC radio talks, the introduction to which was serialised in the Evening Standard and transformed how Pevsner was received. The first part of a Pevsner biography appeared in 2010, followed by two further extensive analyses of Pevsner's work for the BBC published in 2014 and 2015 by Ashgate. In 2017, the University of Cambridge awarded him a PhD in recognition of his scholarly work on Pevsner. Between 2006 and 2009 he brought out four edited collections of writings, radio scripts and TV scripts by Sir John Betjeman, the first of which became a Richard and Judy Book Club Christmas Special and has gone on to sell nearly 100,000 copies. The third of the four books, first published as Sweet Songs of Zion, went on to be reissued as The John Betjeman Hymnbook. Stephen was subsequently named as one of the three foremost Betjeman scholars in the world.
