But there was nothing shy about his confident predication at Friday’s elite athletes’ media conference ahead of the race. More than 16 000 runners took part in the race, which took place in sunny conditions with the temperature rising to over 27 degrees as the backmarkers completed the race.

The Tokyo Olympian crossed the line in 3 hrs 10 min 46 sec, to win by 31 seconds over Johannesburg-based Entsika runner, Siboniso Sikhakhane, who took second place after an intense last kilometre struggle with debutant, Lucky Mohale of Nedbank. “I’m ecstatic to win today,” Seutloali reflected.
