Biography
Stephen Pennell... ... is a published author and broadcast poet. His first book, Star-spangled Villans, was published in 2007, and he has recently followed up with the critically-acclaimed debut novel Gangsters, Geezers & Mods. His musings on music have garnered praise from artists and fans alike, and led to him being named as Brum Bastion at the 2020 Birmingham Music Awards, ahead of other nominees such as Ruby Turner, Phil Etheridge (The Twang) and Mike Skinner from The Streets. As frontman in a band that once caused a near-riot when their set of reggae covers went down like a lead balloon with a predominantly Irish crowd at a New Years Eve gig, the highlight of his musical career was when the group played Digbeth Civic Hall in support of the Labour Party alongside The Style Council, Madness and Billy Bragg. He has written extensively on football in general and Aston Villa in particular for Four-Four-Two and Claret & Blue magazines, and Heroes & Villains fanzine. Pre-COVID, Stephen was an avid gig-goer who basked in the reflected glory of artists with actual talent as he chronicled the adventures of Birmingham’s finest musicians in reviews for Counteract, Birmingham Press and King City Online.
