The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA) is a nonprofit organization focused on empowering Indigenous journalists and enhancing media representation of Indigenous communities. Established in 1983 as the Native American Press Association and renamed in 2023, IJA has over 850 members, including media professionals, academics, and students from the U.S., Canada, and beyond. IJA's mission is to promote accurate reporting about Indigenous peoples, countering stereotypes in mainstream media. The organization emphasizes journalistic ethics, advocates for free press, and supports cultural preservation.
