Biography

My work has appeared in Orion, Creative Nonfiction, The Believer, Salon, The Kenyon Review, KQED FM, KPBS FM, California Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Christian Science Monitor, American Book Review, Sou'wester, WorldView, the San Diego Union-Tribune, magazines at Caltech, Emory, Rice, Pomona, University of Colorado, San Jose State University, and other fine places in the U.S. and Europe. Editorial consulting for universities, nonprofit organizations, startups, and independent schools. Under my leadership, WorldView magazine won its first national awards in its 30+-year history. When I served as editor of Santa Clara Magazine, we won scores of regional and national awards. Along with serving as editor, I also served as Director of Strategic Communications for National Peace Corps Association. I have extensive experience in Ukraine — university teaching with the Peace Corps, hosting a radio show, founding a newspaper, and directing the Fulbright program and other academic exchanges for the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv. I have also served as an election observer repeatedly in Ukraine, as well as in Moldova, Belarus, and Armenia.
