Two years ago, I came face to face with Boko Haram. It was such a narrow margin to death, more dangerous than a previous encounter with militants in the Niger Delta region. I was absorbed in filming and interviews. But a gray-haired old man gave me a hint the moment terrorists arrived at the town of Bama, northeast, Nigeria. “Run for your life,” he whispered in Kanuri language, “Boko Haram spies are in town.” For several hours after the escape, I sat under a neem tree in the insurgency-ravaged city, feeling the fervent breeze. I imagined my footage and face on television and in newspapers the morning after. Those familiar captions saturated my thoughts: “Boko Haram abducts promising, young journalist,” “Boko Haram slaughters abducted journalist,” or “Terrorist demands ransom for an abducted journalist.” From that point on, life and news stories began to assume greater essence to me. It became my choice to report my country's delicate affairs. I wrote of the dreary Boko Haram killings. The sticky spills of crude oil in the deeply polluted Niger Delta, Nigeria. I mirrored the life of Hamsatu Allamin, the teacher who rebukes the deadly terror groups. I co-produced a powerful documentary on the torture and death of child witches in the southeastern city of Calabar. I co-produced a film on the deadly prostitution journey to Europe through the Sahara desert and the Midditerennean Sea {not published yet}. I crossed a fearful brown river to uncover the killing of twins. I feel a certain ambiance of pleasure when I look back at my career as a journalist, which spanned over five years. I have traveled extensively, regularly reporting on environmental, security, development, climate change, politics, and wildlife as well as conservation issues for CNN, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Mongabay, Independent, The New York Times, TRT World, OZY, Arte, Vice Media, African Arguments, South China Morning Post, Equal Times, Media Diversified, Earth Island Journal, The Sun, Liberty Magazine, M.S. Magazine, Ripples Nigeria, This Is Africa {TIA}, Climate Homes News, African Sports Monthly and many more. But my appetite and ambition haven’t attained contentment. I want to pursue much more ambitious projects, with the potential to impact the world and especially Africa. Collaboration with other journalists, who share a fervent zeal for good reporting is a significant part of my aspiration. I am open to a broad range of job opportunities within and outside journalism so long as they offer a unique opportunity to make an impact and grow.
