Biography
Susan Clary is a native Floridian of Cuban descent. She is a graduate of Rollins College in Winter Park where she wrote for The Sandspur, Florida oldest college newspaper. Her 15+ year journalism career included jobs at the Tampa Bay Times (formerly the St. Petersburg Times), Orlando Sentinel and Watermark Media. She covered the environment, crime and law enforcement, state and federal courts and the LGBTQ+ community. She provided legal and political analysis for 24-hour cable news network CFN13 (now Spectrum News 13) and local Fox 35 News respectively. She loves reading court decisions and picking the brains of the great lawyers she has worked with over the years. As a young cop reporter, Clary was always the last to leave a crime scene – hoping to get that one key detail or interview. The knack for being at the right place put her in a position to help the Tampa Police Department apprehend a murder suspect hours after he was suspected of shooting his girlfriend on a city street corner. She was nominated for a Florida Bar Media Award for her coverage of what was then the longest federal insurance fraud trial in history. Her reporting/writing has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists, Florida Society of Newspaper Editors and Florida Press Association. She was named Tampa Hispanic Heritage Woman of the Year in Media, and won a Hispanic Trailblazers Award from Orlando’s Latino Leadership. Clary left newspapers and served the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court for the Public Defender and the Judiciary as an Investigator, Legal Training Coordinator and Public Affairs Officer. She has worked at three law firms in legal writing, business development and communications. She served three terms on the Orange Soil & Water Conservation District. In her first run for office, she was endorsed by former Vermont Governor Howard Dean as one of his “Dean Dozen.” During two terms as chair, the board won state and national diversity awards from the Association of Florida Conservation Districts and the National Association of Conservation Districts. Clary founded her own company, True Results, and has worked for progressive nonprofits during election cycles like Florida New Majority, Florida Consumer Action Network and the League of Conservation Voters. She has worked on many political campaigns including U.S. Senate, U.S. Congress, State House and local races. She is a freelance writer, editor and researcher and has written for Visit Florida, Florida Politics, Brady Reports and Florida Voices. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Orange County Register, Washington Post and many other new sites. She is a known for providing excellent crisis communications and public relations to clients - with an eye toward humanizing complex issues. She is a storyteller. She has appeared on local, national and international media as a legal analyst. Clary is the founder of Compassionate Canines, a small breed dog rescue.
