Biography

I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. For the first 24 years of my working life, I was a paraprofessional at the Phoenix Public Library. Then, in 1990, I got my library degree from the University of Arizona and pursued a career in academic libraries in the northeast. I was a systems librarian at Adelphi University, NYU, Quinnipiac University, The New York Law School and the College of New Rochelle. Since 1989 I wrote for a series of library publications, including Library Journal, American Libraries, Wilson Library Bulletin, and Information Today. This led to an opportunity to write three books about library automation. A year ago I found out to my surprise and delight that a number of my scholarly articles are tracked by Web of Science. In my work at Quinnipiac, I was sent to Ireland 4 times to work on Irish history projects. This later led to a page Irish History Digitized. I am currently retired, but still write regularly for Information Today. As a retiree, I keep active as a photographer for Flickr and Yelp, and I maintain several dozen web sites.

  • TopicLake Insights: The AI Tool Making Government Regulations and Updates More Intuitive

By Terry Ballard| Information Today Verified I began my library career in the 1960s at a large public library. I can remember the basement full of government documents ranging from tiny pamphlets to oversized books. Each week, a new supply of them would arrive, and I would head down to interfile the new entries with the old, using a totally inscrutable filing system. These items were there for everyone to use, but I can’t recall ever retrieving one for a patron.

  • Technology Grows in Brooklyn: A Gathering With an Emphasis on AI

By Terry Ballard| Information Today Verified DUMBO is one of New York City’s nicknames for a special neighborhood. It stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Not only is it a scenic and thriving area, but it is also forming a reputation as one of the more tech-savvy places on the East Coast. The technology emphasis began early in the century, taking advantage of low rents and an educated population. City planners worked to boost the synergy by making the neighborhood startup-friendly.
