Social Justice Club brings awareness to seafarer’s rights, plans to engage students in social justice work in beyond The Bluff
By Tiffany Marquez Escobar| The Beacon (University of Portland)@ Last fall, students in the social justice minor capstone class found themselves learning about seafarer’s rights, which pertain to workers who regularly travel by sea. According to the International Chamber of Shipping, many migrant seafarers come from the Philippines, Russia, Indonesia, China and India. On Sep. 13, 2024, AJ Meraña’s remains were identified following reports of an unidentified body in the Columbia River near County Line Park in Cathlamet, Washington.
‘Gather as one, unite in the heartbeat of the drums’: Native American Alliance to host first annual powwow April 5
By Tiffany Marquez Escobar| The Beacon (University of Portland)@ For the board members of the Native American Alliance (NAA), hosting a powwow at UP has always been a goal of theirs. A is a gathering of Native American dancing, singing and celebration, and according to NAA Faculty Adviser Alejandro Santana, the last time a powwow was hosted at UP was in 2013. NAA Co-presidents Keisha DeSheuquette and Amaya McMillan and Vice President Damian Tegreeny, all seniors, were driven to end their time at UP by making these plans a reality.

Humans for Housing, a Portland-based nonprofit, is one of many advocacy groups educating people on housing issues like homelessness among older adults.
