  • Ideas & Opinions - Tom Durkin: Blindsided by love

By Tom Durkin Verified| The Union Verified I did not see it coming. I didn’t even know I was nominated. I am deeply honored and humbled to be named Citizen of the Year by The Union in its 2024 Best of Nevada County magazine (March 29, page 11). But I didn’t do this by myself. There are so many friends, role models and mentors (most younger than me) who gave me the support, encouragement and opportunities I needed. And my apologies in advance to everybody I haven’t mentioned.

  • Community meeting for wildfire evacuation April 12

By Tom Durkin Verified| Yubanet Verified You cannot outrun a wildfire. What will you do if you don’t have a way to escape? According to CALFIRE, Nevada City is in a Very High Severity Zone. Other agencies have rated Nevada City at 90% to 100% risk of wildfire. Therefore, under a Neighbor-to-Neighbor (N2N) grant from the Governor’s Office, Sierra Roots and the Nevada City Office of Emergency Services are hosting a brainstorming session from 10 a.m. to noon at Seaman’s Lodge in Pioneer Park.

Lee Wessman, my editor, called me into his office to tell me he was laying me off because I was the least productive reporter in the newsroom. Of course, I was. I was only a reporter three days a week.
