Aside from a few old guys who had been at the paper since the 1930s, the staff of The News-Gazette was young people who viewed this as a stop on the way to a big-city paper or an industry position. I was hired to work the copy desk, which everyone but editor Harold “Shorty” Holmes knew was a mistake because I had never done it before and I only wanted to be a writer.
