Biography
Journalist, broadcaster, and author. I am currently the crime and court reporter with the Bradford Telegraph & Argus. Since 1987 I've worked across the North of England as a staff journalist on daily and weekly newspapers such as The Yorkshire Post. I've also freelanced extensively in magazines, on radio, on television, and online, including for the BBC and ITV Yorkshire. I was the Yorkshire Post film critic for 21 years, from 1995 to 2016. From 2010 to 2015 I guested on BBC Radio Leeds as film critic on Movie Monday. From 2007 to 2022 I was a columnist for The Yorkshire Post, writing on film and the arts. From 1999 to 2011 I worked at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television as Head of Film Programming and as Artistic Director of the annual Bradford International Film Festival. From 2008 to 2020 I taught film journalism, film, and journalism at the University of Huddersfield and Leeds Trinity University. I am the author or editor of seven books, plus seven monographs. In addition I have contributed to more than 20 other books. I also write short fiction. From 2018 to 2022 I was a Local Democracy Reporter covering Kirklees in West Yorkshire. In 2022 I joined the MP Kim Leadbeater as Constituency Support Manager on a 12-month contract. I've guested on a range of TV programmes including Newsnight, Sky News, BBC Breakfast, Inside Out, Look North, and Calendar. On radio I have guested on LBC, the Jeremy Vine Show, Times Radio, and Simon Mayo's Drivetime show on Greatest Hits Radio, which used my "confession". I also appeared on radio documentaries about the films Billy Liar and Brassed Off. My 2008 book Made in Yorkshire (words by me, photographs by Jim Moran) was the inspiration for the award-winning feature documentary The First Film.
