Biography

Tory Starr is the Director of Social Media at WGBH, working across the Foundation on social media strategy, best practices, platform partnerships, and project development. She works with individual units on social media strategy and execution; tactics to increase traffic, tune-in, brand awareness, and membership; and evaluation of campaigns in light of new research and shifting user behaviors. Starr also leads social journalism training and provides ongoing support for editorial best practices in distributed content production and implementation throughout the Foundation. Starr has worked in digital and social editorial production roles at American Experience, The Takeaway, and PRI’s The World. Since early 2015, she has been working primarily with WGBH’s national units on show development, audience building and aligning social media with production strategic goals. In 2016, she was promoted to a Foundation-wide role and has helped oversee the launch of a Foundation-wide social media management, listening and analytics platform. This fall she will be working on a public-facing Social Media Portal for ongoing training and best practices, pursuing sponsorship and other business opportunities on emerging platforms, and updating employee education initiatives to bolster social production and social journalism skills across the Foundation. Starr holds a BA from Colby College and a Masters in Journalism from Northeastern University.

  • Another Domino Falls

By Tory Starr Verified| North Coast Journal Verified The closure of Mad River Community Hospital's (MRCH) obstetrics services this fall makes me very sad ("'Loss,'" Aug. 29). MRCH is an important part of Humboldt County and many of my friends, family and neighbors gave birth there over the past 40 years. As someone who works in healthcare, it also makes me angry. Everyone involved in providing healthcare has seen this day coming for years.

  • Health Matters | Open Door reflects on its work during health center week

By Tory Starr Verified| Times-Standard Verified Today is the last day of National Health Center Week. It is a time in the year when we reflect on and celebrate what Open Door has achieved, in our goal to serve the North Coast, and the success of community health centers in general. Community Health Centers support communities in places that would otherwise go without medical care, which is especially important to rural areas like ours.

  • Platform changes roundup: March 2020

By Tory Starr Verified| wgbhsocial.org@ Social media platforms in March hustled to introduce features and tools to help publishers and brands during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as new upgrades to Facebook Live, Instagram’s Co-Watching feature and curated spaces for trusted content that have been introduced on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Reddit, Pinterest and YouTube. It seems that certain big changes to social platforms such as Twitter’s “fleets” have been put on the backburner.
