Biography
Tracey Eaton is an award-winning writer, producer and multimedia journalist. He has worked throughout Latin America and is a former Fulbright scholar in Ecuador. Eaton headed Dallas Morning News bureaus in Mexico and Cuba from 1994 to 2005. He investigated corruption and organized crime in Mexico and along the U.S.-Mexico border, and covered the fighting in Afghanistan after the Sept. 11 attacks. His stories have appeared in hundreds of online media outlets and more than 100 U.S., Canadian and Latin American newspapers. Clients have included NBC News, USA Today, Business Insider, Tampa Bay Times, Newsweek, the South Florida Sun Sentinel and the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting. Eaton assisted the Sun Sentinel with two investigative projects, Plundering America: The Cuban Criminal Pipeline, published in January 2015, and Easy Money: U.S. Welfare Flows to Cuba, published in October 2015. Easy Money won first place for politics reporting in the 66th annual Green Eyeshade Awards and second place for investigative reporting in the Florida Society of News Editors contest. Plundering America was a finalist for Investigative Reporters & Editors’ Tom Renner Award, which recognizes outstanding watchdog reporting. Eaton travels to Cuba regularly and is the founder of the Cuba Money Project, which tracks U.S. tax dollars spent in Cuba. In December 2018, the Pulitzer Center awarded him and reporter Katherine Lewin a grant to report on Cuba’s precarious housing situation. In March 2015, the Pulitzer Center awarded Eaton a grant to carry out a project on Cuban youth. See Cuban Youth: A New Dawn?. Eaton has also researched Cuba’s democracy movement and the U.S. government’s role in the country’s political evolution. The Pulitzer Center awarded him a grant for that work in 2010. In August 2015, Eaton assisted NBC’s Nightly News, led by Lester Holt, with its coverage of the opening of U.S. embassy in Havana. In March 2016, he traveled to Cuba again to help with NBC’s coverage of President Barack Obama’s historic visit to the island.
