Biography

I was born and raised in a small town in Virginia. After graduating from James Madison University with a B.A. in English in 2005, I moved to Chicago. I worked in higher education administration for a few years and blogged for fun. In 2010, I moved to New York. After a brief stint as an office manager at a start-up, I became an assistant editor at BlackBook. Within eight months, I was promoted to senior editor. My primary focus was running BlackBookMag.com, but I also wrote and edited pieces for the print magazine, including front-of-book items and features. After BlackBook, I was the Deputy Editor at Flavorwire. I wrote a little bit of everything: lists, reviews, interviews, cultural criticism, and profiles. My writing was cited/quoted in places like Digg, The New Yorker, The New York Observer, Reddit, Salon, Slate, Vulture, Wonkette, and others. I'm currently the Culture Editor at Esquire.com. Most recently I was the Deputy Editor of Decider, the New York Post's entertainment vertical. I helped launch the site in 2014, establishing its tone, voice, and vision. My writing has been published in a variety of places, including The Awl, Brooklyn Magazine, Capital New York, FourTwoNine, GOOD, Gothamist, The Hairpin, Idolator, Matter, Men's Journal, Nylon, Out, Popdust, Ratter, Slate, Thirteen.org, This Recording, The Village Voice, Vox, and Yahoo. I have appeared as a guest on HuffPost Live, Melissa Harris-Perry and The Ed Show (MSNBC), Q (CBC), and Let’s Talk with Abby and Ari (Sirius XM). I co-created and co-starred in the web series Disappointing Gay Best Friend and have performed on stage at The Pit, Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, The Bell House, and The Annoyance Theatre in New York and iO (formerly Improv Olympic) and The Playground in Chicago. I co-created and co-hosted the reading series Say It To My Face!, and participated in readings at Housing Works Bookstore and Café, Happy Ending, and Film Society Lincoln Center.
