Biography
Urmila Ramakrishnan is a multimedia journalist who embraces the hyphen. As a journalist-gastronome-writer-producer-vlogger-polygot-photographer-entrepreneur-cook, she utilizes all platforms that allow for better storytelling. Most recently, she co-founded a gastronomic tourism magazine called Carry On. She's also a writer and producer at a culinary startup called Monj Inc. in Sausalito. One of Ramakrishnan's most foundational moments as a food writer was as a Culinary Trust Food Writing Fellow, sponsored by the Julia Child Foundation. The program partnered with various food-centric publications to give food writers an opportunity to harness their voice. She holds a master's degree in food culture and communication from the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Italy. and a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota. She's published multi-platform content on various sites from The New York Times and Time Out New York to Delta SKY Magazine. As a freelance writer for Guerrero Howe Custom Media, people are the focus of her work. Everyone has a story, and Ramakrishnan has the unique ability to encourage sources to let their guards down and show their personal sides, warts and all. For her, journalism is about understanding and telling a story that's relatable and memorable–whether that's a war hero or a CEO. She's currently the producer for The Press, San Francisco Chronicle's new tasting room and Wine Country destination guide. When she's not chasing the latest scoop, Ramakrishnan can be found experimenting with recipes in the kitchen. Her passion for cooking and eating started when she was a chubby-cheeked kindergartener. She remembers standing by her mother's side, anxiously waiting for her turn to stir caramelizing onions in an oversized wok. She continues to find inspiration to combine food, travel, and writing in her daily life.
