USC has faculty that are dedicated to improving the lives of people living in these rural areas, specifically in healthcare and STEM education access. Over 27% of South Carolina's population lives in rural areas, and about 20% of those people live in poverty. Every day, there are around people in rural communities who receive medical services they cannot pay for.
