It was formed in 1991 through the merger of the Arkansas Democrat and the Arkansas Gazette, which have a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The Arkansas Gazette, founded in 1819, was the first newspaper in the state, while the Arkansas Democrat began in 1878, leading to a long-standing rivalry.
