By William Blick| Substack@ “When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him."-Jonathan SwiftOne of the most popular tales of posthumous publishing fame and discovery of genius is the story of John Kennedy Toole and his novel, Confederacy of Dunces. The legend goes: Toole intention was to take his own life at age 30 if his magnum opus did not get published. In the face of rejection, Toole gave up his life.
By William Blick| Substack@ A long time ago in the early 80s, I sat in an orthodontist chair getting my braces put on. Through the tedium, the doctor always had the obligatory A.M. “lite rock” radio station playing through the speakers. I can vividly recall drifting away listening to Key Largo by Bertie Higgins, and putting some sort of narrative to it in my juvenile mind. I did not know who “Bogie” and “Bacall” were, but I surmised something or other. However, it simultaneously did make me feel relaxed.
By William Blick| Substack@ Eric Roberts could have been one of the all time great Hollywood actors. Like his co-star in The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984), Mickey Rourke, he made poor decisions and self-destructive lifestyle choices. Eric Roberts burst onto the Hollywood scene in 1978, as the reluctant heir to a present day Gypsy-clan throne in the highly underrated King of the Gypsies with a cast that includes Sterling Hayden, Shelly Winters, Susan Sarandon, Judd Hirsch, and Brooke Shields.
