Freelance Radio Reporter, Freelance

Brooklyn, New York

Biography

I’m a freelance journalist and audio producer based in Brooklyn, New York, making narrative podcasts and radio news stories. When I’m reporting my own stuff, I usually cover politics, conspiracy theories, identities, or climate change. From 2013-2018 I was a correspondent for North Country Public Radio in Upstate New York, and I’ve continued working with the station on freelance projects like 'If All Else Fails,' an investigative podcast about far-right extremism that I co-hosted. We also partnered on an award-winning radio series about Elise Stefanik, a high-ranking Republican in Congress. I studied Cultural Anthropology and hosted my first radio show at the University of Vermont before attending the Transom Story Workshop, a residential audio journalism program in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Need a reporter? Need a sound designer for your show, or help developing your podcast idea? Let’s work together! Shoot me an email or give a call via my website, zdhirsch.com.

  • Far-right extremism is thriving in rural areas. Here's what it looks like in Upstate NY

By Emily Russell, Zach Hirsch Verified| Auburn Citizen Verified There’s a little wine shop in downtown Ballston Spa, New York with rainbow-colored bottles lining the shop’s front window. The village is small, about 5,000 people, and attracts tourists from all around the world. Last summer, the owner of the wine shop, Jes Rich, noticed a group of masked men in the street. “As soon as I saw them I ran out the door,” said Rich, who is openly queer and sees her shop as a safe and welcoming space for other queer people.
