By Zaeli Kane| parent.com@ I was born with a crossed eye. In the early years of my life, adults would look at me first with the usual delight, then confusion and embarrassment. “Do you know your baby’s eyes aren’t right?” people would ask my parents. They very much did, of course. At three years old I had a partially successful corrective surgery and became known as the girl who leaves her tiny glasses on random sidewalk squares.
By Zaeli Kane| parent.com@ Why is there no holiday celebrating in-laws? What a unique gift, to gain new parents and siblings halfway through life. I always loved being a sister. Having a blood sister is a big part of what made me who I am. Now I have one by my brother’s marriage, and another from my husband’s side. We look up to each other, challenge each other, and keep each other sane. I don’t say it enough, but for the record: I’m deeply grateful to have them in my life. So here’s to you, my sisters-in-law.
By Zaeli Kane| parent.com@ I remember the thrill of going through my mother’s purse like a sneaky anthropologist. Each item seemed imbued with magic and importance, at least enough that she would want it with her at all times. Among the pens and checkbooks there would always be a few mysterious items for touching up her makeup. I liked to line them up on the bathroom vanity as she did her hair for church, or applied fragrant creams before bed.
